The importance of a good credit report is well known to almost every individual in the world. If you have somehow spoiled your credit report and lowered your credit score, it is not an impossible task to improve your credit report. You need to keep a few things in mind and work towards improving your credit report accordingly.

Pay off your installment loans like mortgages, auto loans, student loans, etc. Definitely it is easier said than done but you need to start thinking about paying off and paying down your loans. If however this is a little tough for you then you should make sure that you get your balances below 30% of the credit limit on the various credit cards you have. This helps bettering your credit score.

When you are looking to start the damage management process for your credit score, then you might consider closing old accounts. Some experts do not recommend this simply because it shows a good credit history but when you are looking to make amends in your credit report then this might be one step you would want to take for sure. Once you stop using your old accounts, issuers will have to stop updating those accounts in your credit report. The accounts will still exist in your credit report but will not be given much importance in the credit rating formula.

Request your creditors to erase the last late payment. You can send them request applications for the same and if you have been a good customer in the past, your creditors might as well consider your plea. In fact if you make a series of 10 to 12 on time payments, lenders might erase previous delinquencies. It does not harm your credit report to send out a request application to your creditors.

Make sure that you do not apply for more credit cards and accounts. If you do not have a good credit score then applying for new accounts can substantially dip your credit score. Transfer of money from a high limit card to a card with low credit limit can also harm your credit score. Avoid concentrating your money in a single credit card.

Check your credit report thoroughly and dispute the accounts that are not your. At times some mistakes creep in credit reports. Make sure that you get rid of all such mistakes. In fact checking your credit report on a regular basis also helps you safeguard against identity theft.

This way you can start your credit repair spree. Initially it will be tough but once repaired you will have a good financial life for the rest of your life unless you choose to destroy it again.
