Is Your Baby Bedding Risky?

By: Ashley Smith

It's hard to imagine but according to studies 6000 babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome every year while 900 of these deaths are actually caused by soft nursery bedding. Thus, you must ask yourself if your baby bedding is safe.
There is a risk of the infant suffocating if soft bedding is used. Especially if the head sinks into the bedding. Plush mattresses provide maximum comfort for babies but are a safety threat as well. They might not have the strength to roll over to recover from the dangerous position and the fatal accidents might happen if no one is around to take good care of the little one and as infants are too weak, when their heads are being placed on the soft mattress.
parents can select a baby nursery bedding with a firm mattress that does not get depressed easily when some weight is being applied on it in order to avoid accidents. You can assess the strength of a mattress with the simple test of pressing one hand down on the mattress and guaging the resistance to the force applied. The more resistance a mattress demonstrates, the better the mattress.
Bumper pads in baby cribs pose a threat of suffocation. There is no doubt that the colors and designs are attractive but many recommend removing them from the crib as an infant who falls asleep with their tiny mouth up against the padding will have their movement and breathing restricted and can potentially suffocate.
The parent should take more precaution and care to the infant because infant may be weak and vulnurable during this period. Buy firm bumper pads because there are rare cases of strangulation from bumper pads that have strings, or suffocation from bumper pads that yield to heavier objects.
Research has shown that toxic gases, harmful to baby, are found in mattresses. Some researchers have found that phosphorus and arsenic which are generally used as fire retardants, are added to mattresses which can be very harmful. Babies may die while sleeping as a result of inhaling hazardous chemicals that have reacted with other chemicals found in mattresses.
Scientists have since found, however, that a frequently occurring fungus in baby bedding may be one of the reactants which is an aid in releasing these toxic fumes. Because of that, they suggest that mom and dads not use any older style bedding in the baby's room that could have mold and/or mildew on it from being used prior. Babies crib bedding should not be reused from one baby to another because old bedding can carry fungus. Old reused bedding will look less pretty than a new baby nursery bedding.
Parents should be able to guage the safety of their baby's bedding if they consider all these factors. To avoid sleepless nights, parents should just choose safe beddings for their babies, it will not only relieve them of their worries but will also let the baby enjoy his/her slumber.

In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton crib bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Trend Lab's Maya nursery bedding), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.
