5-Minute Home Improvement Tips

You do not have to spend countless hours to have a beautiful-looking home. There are several strategies you can use, each of which only takes a few minutes. One is to have a notebook where you write down ideas for redecoration and reorganization as they come to you. Your recorded thoughts will be the perfect tool for those days when you are free to work on a household project. Do one smaller thing every day that will not have to be done again for a long time (for example, organizing a drawer in the kitchen or cleaning the corners of the ceiling). After just a few days of this, you will love how neat and structured your home feels!Another thing you can do consistently with just a little bit of time is view new ways to decorate areas of the home. Online, in magazines, and even in department store ads are many ideas you may love to implement in your home. Each one of us can have a beautiful, clean house: all it takes is a couple of extra minutes each day.

A Point for Functionalism

Though there are lots of ways to decorate a home, the “cluttered” look doesn’t quite work anywhere. It can be easy to get carried away, but often the result is opposite of what is intended. Have you ever been in a room that is so overstuffed with décor that it is awkward to move around?Others have so many off-season décor items in their garage that they cannot even park their car. Though form is important, remember that function comes first. Think about the kitchen: most people use all the counter space they have, so to fill that area with knickknacks is usually a bad idea. At the other end of the spectrum, bedrooms are places where some decorative touches are welcomed and appreciated. A good rule of thumb is if you need to move a decorative piece out of the way more than twice a week, it probably should be thrown out or exchanged for a more functional item.

Two Easy Ways to Preserve Your Flowers

Many special occasions come with flowers, and preserving those flowers is a wonderful way to have a memento of that special day. Because flowers wilt within 2 to 3 weeks (and sometimes closer to 2 to 3 days), you will need to dry them once they are done being displayed. Two techniques for preserving flowers lead to two totally different looks—but neither is difficult to do. The first is to hang the flower(s) upside down. You will need to dry them in a place with little moisture and light to get the maximum beauty preserved within your flowers. Once your flowers are dried, you will want to place them in a display case or shadowbox so they do not get damaged by touch. The second technique for drying flowers is to press them. Since this process does not work very well with bigger or rounder flowers, consider pressing the flower’s petals rather than the whole flower; with small, delicate flowers, pressing yields very pretty results.

Designing for Home Plants

The size of the plants you choose often makes a big difference in the overall appearance of your decorating. When you add plants to larger coffee tables and to dining room and kitchen tables, choose plants that are 1-2 feet high. You probably want something with wider leaves to attract the eye and the attention of the visitor. On the other hand, decorating for a corner will require more vertical movement and longer leaves to make it “pop” more for the viewer. The more you plan ahead and experiment with different options, the happier you will be with the final result. If you want a fresh look without the hassle and maintenance of real plants, choose a high-quality silk plant. They last much longer, they aren’t appealing to insects, and they are easy to take care of.
